Traditional Fare at Climping
It’s that time of year when there is nothing better at the end of a long walk than a traditional pub meal in front of a roaring fire. On a blustery Friday in November, I joined Mel from the Arun Business Partnership for just that at the Black Horse in Climping.

Garden Innovations

Garden Innovations has established itself as the leading UK manufacturer supplier of affordable, practical, water saving devices systems. All of which are highly efficient environmentally friendly.

Many of our products have won the leading awards within the UK Garden Industry.

We constantly strive to innovate and develop practical water saving products which greatly benefit both the gardener the environment in which we all exist.

Many of our products regularly appear on the leading gardening D.I.Y. TV programmes including, BBC Gardeners World, BBC Gardeners World Live from Chelsea and from Hampton Court, Richard Jackson's Grass Roots, The Really Useful Show, and our 'Basket Bags' have even appeared on Coronation Street - in full bloom for a whole season with very little watering.

The Garden Industry Awards are an indication of our products worth to you all, not just to the thousands of Gardeners who regularly use an increasing range of products.

Best New Garden Product Award -@ Glee 1996
Best New garden Product awards - GIMA 1997
    Golden Shed Award 2001
Runner-up Best New Garden - Product Award GIMA 2002.
Gardenex Export Achievment - Award 2002.
Garden Export Achievement - Award GIMA 2004
Business of the Year - Arun Business Partnership 2007

Like many small businesses, Garden Innovations (founded in 1996) first worked from a makeshift office at our family home in Balcombe, West Sussex. We started with a dream; - to change the way UK gardeners water their plants, at the same time reduce the huge volumes of water wasted throughout the world by the continued use of hoses heavy old fashioned watering cans. Even back in 1996 some of us saw the coming of water shortages, drought, and the advancing change in the global climatic conditions. It has been, and will continue to be, a difficult path that we chosen, but gradually, very gradually, gardeners throughout the UK, and more recently, the world, are adopting our easy to use environmentally friendly 'green' garden watering systems and sundries. We have not been side tracked at any time from our aims, and we continue to only design, manufacture, and market, water saving products, made wherever possible from recycled materials.

However, as we can all see, and are made constantly more aware, there is a quickening advance of global climate change. This has I think, prompted our competitors in the UK's garden manufacturing sector to break into what was, our niche market, with several even attempting to copy our products. This recent competition has prompted us to bring forward several innovative products from our R D programme, and I am pleased to say that this has been very successful, with several products being recently withdrawn by our competitors.

Innovation has been the key to our modest success, but we strongly feel, that most manufacturing companies should have a strong and continuous R. D. programme if they wish to keep ahead of the competition, and thereby grow their company.

We recently moved from a small factory unit in Wick to a new, and much bigger, unit in Rusting ton. We are fortunate to be surrounded by many great local businesses, and we are gradually utilising more more of their talents and services.

One of the products we were recently 'forced' to introduce was our 'Growtube' an innovative device for watering grow bags without any wastage of water, or liquid fertiliser, whatsoever, and as an extra consumer buying incentive it incorporates 3 patented integral cane supports. This well received sundry was entered into the 2 of the UK's garden industries major awards, and was a finalist and runner up in both. Entering national and local awards is highly effective for us, and we would recommend that all companies big, or small, avail their selves of the considerable opportunities they freely afford, not least, the considerable editorial and media coverage, networking with like minded companies people. Our own Arun Business Partnership Awards, which are so well organised, are a perfect example. Garden Innovations is justly proud of our committed Arun District Council, the Arun Business Partnership the surrounding local business community.

Greenpower

Greenpower is an organisation set up to promote engineering and design and technology to young people. We do this by challenging teams to design, build and then race single-seater electric cars. Currently we work with young people aged from 9 - 25. Over the ten years Greenpower has existed we have built up a national competition which sees some 400 teams take part in our events.

Greenpower also likes to involve community within the project encouraging local industry to work with schools and teams bringing them together to create the cars and help run the events. Our work with the Littlehampton Academy is a great example of this. Not only is a team from the Academy currently building a car to take part in the Formula 24 category for 11 - 16 year olds but they also work with us to run a Goblin project for all the local primary schools. We are looking forward to returning to Banjo Road next summer for this event which has been made possible through the support of the Littlehampton Town Council, Sara Hopkins from the Littlehampton Academy and the local Lions Group.
Winning the Small Business of the Year Award we know is a great opportunity to raise our profile locally and hopefully get more businesses and schools involved in the projects we are running in the Arun District. Including the development of our new low carbon office which we will be moving to in January and will be open to local business to visit and explore the energy saving technology which is available.

We would like to thank all those who nominated us for this award.

Cuff Miller

The story begins in the dying days of World War II, when two young Fleet Air Arm officers, who had become staunch friends, found their thoughts turning to the future and were discussing what was to come next. Horace Steele (H.D) would be returning for the most-part to the motor trade business he had built up personally in Worthing before hostilities began.

E.W Cuff-Miller (Cuff) (an enthusiastic amateur motorcycle racer) was certain only that he did not want to return to his profession of bank clerk so with Cuffs enthusiasm, H.D's proven expertise and capital from both parties Cuff Miller Co was born. Starting at the Thorncroft Garage, now occupied by the local Honda Dealer on March 29th 1947, and moving to its present larger site “the new garage” some 11years later.

Life was rather different then, Cuff's as it rapidly became known sported 4 vehicle franchises Ford, Fiat, Rootes Group and Jaguar, and sold 6 different brands of petrol. Cuff relaxed by driving a variety of different cars at Goodwood with mixed success, the two most memorable epithets being Cuffs belief that he drove more laps of Goodwood in anger than anyone, and that a young Derek Bell got his first real chance in a competitive car when Cuff was kind enough to lend him his Marcos. H.D was also building his business successfully, while occasionally disappearing on Safari and on other dangerous pursuits. Matters proceeded through to the end of the 1980 by which time Cuffs matured into a thriving business, but had concentrated it's loyalty to one car brand, Ford and one fuel supplier, Shell.

By the time Cuff died in1990 at the age of 84, the business was soundly established with a turnover of £4m a year, and Cuff’s own wholehearted philosophy which was that 'A satisfied customer is more important than an extra profit' was practiced in the business, long before it became fashionable to think in those terms.

Though the loss of Cuff was deeply felt by all of his team, it had to be put behind by his company, which it was, thus enableing Cuffs to prosper further with assistance from H.D's son Michael, and from H.D himself.

In the last 16 years things have changed enormously. The bigger dealers have gotten bigger, and the technology has become incredibly complex. For instance the outgoing Mondeo has a maximum of seven programmable modules (computers) in it, the next Mondeo, and the present S-Max can have up to 42, containing two million lines of computer code. Even though cars have had to become heavier to be safer, fuel economy has had to improve at the same time and so has the level of pollutants in the exhaust gases. The old vision of a technician with black oily hands and face wielding a spanner has had to be replaced with highly skilled diagnostic technicians, wielding portable computers.

The undoubted fact that it is all changing ever faster has meant that in order to prosper any Motor Dealer has to be able to rely increasingly on the willingness and hearts and minds of the team being completely involved. Though Cuffs now has a turnover of around £12m a year, we are still a David amongst Goliaths. So, Cuffs finding new opportunities, and really looking after our customers well is essential if there is to be long term security for the 40 families supported by the business.

The truth is that we only have loyal customers until we allow someone to look after them better than we do .........but we also remember that it was David that won.

Ham Manor Golf Club

Welcome To Ham Manor Golf Club in West Sussex

The land over which the lovely Ham Manor golf course has been laid out for more than 67 years has a long and distinguished history.

Today the golf course is separated from the sea by a main road, a small town and some two miles.

It is difficult to picture the area criss-crossed with creeks and inlets, with access by boat to a quay at Poling which lies on the landward side of the course.

Dizzy

Set up four years ago, dizzy is a social enterprise that combines charitable goals with commerce, and works to raise awareness of diabetes and provide support for the diabetic community.
Dizzy was 'kick-started' by a husband and wife team. Jools Chaffer had the project in mind for a number of years. Jane a Type 1 diabetes sufferer for over 20 years, prompted Jools to bring the project to fruition. Initially the venture was fully funded and supported by Jools and Jane Chaffer, along with generous donations from friends and family. The couple always thought that more must be done to raise awareness of diabetes.

Dizzy is raising money and awareness via 'boutique' retail charity shops to support people living with diabetes. With four branches within the south of England, they are ideally based to support this growing condition.

Jools and Jane have now opened their fourth store, these new additional outlets since their first at East Preston in August 2005 have been fully funded via re-investment from the profits raised since this date. Their revised business plan to reach a target of 5 stores in West Sussex / Central South Coast is nearly complete. However due to the current economic climate this is constantly being reviewed and will be carried out with extreme caution according to Jools.

Dizzy won 3 awards at this year’s Arun Business Partnership Awards Ceremony, Jools comments: “We’re obviously delighted to have won these three awards. Our aim is to get into the community, raise awareness of diabetes and be a successful business at the same time”. “Dizzy has dramatically increased awareness of diabetes in the local area. We now aim to work with other groups, CIC's or charities to open other stores around the country”

Dizzy also hopes to assist other projects from any net profit. These could include contributions for individual assistance, support / awareness groups or similar organisations and local Diabetes Centre’s.

Our primary aim is to promote awareness of Diabetes in the locality
Our objective is to improve the lives of diabetes sufferers
Our mission is to assist diabetics both supportively and financially

Sussex Safer Roads

Throughout Sussex, conscientious road users - whether they be car drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists or pedestrians are working together to reduce the casualty levels on our roads. Some of this reduction is also due to the work of the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (the SSRP), which is funded by a central Government grant to the three local highway authorities (West and East Sussex County Councils, Brighton and Hove City Council). Other partners in the SSRP are Sussex Police, the Highways Agency, the Surrey and Sussex Courts Service together with the Fire and Rescue Services from each side of Sussex.

The Sussex community of residents, businesses and tourists also have a vital part to play in the partnership's day to day activities. Concerns from local and parish councillors and individuals are taken into account as the partnership plans new road safety initiatives across the county. Whether we receive comments via our website, on the telephone or when we meet you at shows and events, it's your feedback about your roads which helps us target areas efficiently and effectively.

The Creative Woodworking Company

The Creative Woodworking Company was established in 2005. From the outset the customer has been at the heart of the business. In order for the company to be successful and provide a quality service the client is involved and consulted throughout the commission; this relationship has achieved the following results.

• A clear understanding of the clients needs by TCWC.
• An enjoyable experience for the client
• A sense of achievement for the client through involvement
• Openness and transparency between the client and TCWC
• Trust through reliability and quality of workmanship
• Repeat business for the company

To gauge client satisfaction and stand out as a company we have embraced two quality kite mark schemes. These being:-

• The Buy with Confidence scheme operated by WSCC Trading Standards
• Checkatrade

Clients are invited to complete an assessment form and return these at their leisure to the relevant organisations for monitoring of quality and overall experience of service. Examples of these schemes and current feedback are attached for your assistance. The benefits of these schemes cannot be underestimated, for example our website has a built in tracker (Stat Counter), this can determine the route the client has followed prior to approaching TCWC an example of recent activity is enclosed, Checkatrade and BWC can be clearly tracked from this sheet confirming the impact of these kite marks and the research by the client into our performance.

Communication with TCWC has been simplified in order to make the clients experience positive from the outset. TCWC is a responsive organisation embracing technology i.e.

• Base office phone with answer phone
• Office Fax
• Email
• Website with easy operation contact page
• Mobile with links to email and SMS messaging

With many of our bespoke commissions the client will have a vision of what they require, as part of the estimating process an annotated drawing is prepared (see examples) to ensure the exacting requirements of the client are captured and presented in a professional manner. This design process is all part of the necessary bond and understanding between client and TCWC ensuring quality, client satisfaction and a successful commission.

We pride ourselves on our customer experience and present our completed application form and supporting evidence for your consideration.

Emma works with a variety of women, from Lawyers, Interior Designers, Record Labels and Publishers, to Cosmetic Surgeons, Beauty Therapists and Child Minders. It’s safe to say she’s seen it all! She says “What all of the women I work with have in common is passion and drive, which I think is the most important thing - You must believe in the service you can provide.”

Emma believes that good ideas and a good attitude go a long way in business and, of course that confidence is key, “that’s where I come in” Emma says. “Many of the women I have met have such potential but are lacking self-belief. So part of my job is to listen to them, to ask them how they feel about what they want to do. Sometimes it just takes someone to sit and listen for some fantastic ideas to flourish”. Emma has definitely hit the nail on the head there; indeed, most women I know have a colossal TO DO list following them around!

What caught my attention most about Emma is her sheer dedication to these ‘women in need’. She travels to them on a daily basis, regardless of them being at work or home. And her support is not just for women at the early stages of their career, she guides them every step of the way (for a maximum 3 years). “Generally women are more successful in business” Emma adds “their businesses often sustain for longer. However they are usually smaller than men’s - My dream is to see these small businesses grow and develop”. As long as Emma Drew continues to offer her valuable support to the women of West Sussex, I believe that they will.

Who do I contact?

How will it work?

An Invitation

Hello, my name’s Roger Joy and I am the dealer principal at Newbarn KIA. I know from talking to customers that many were unsure at first about test driving a KIA. After all, we in the UK are known for being reserved when it comes to trying out something new, even if it does turn out to be better than we imagined and an improvement on what we currently drive.

Without exception all were impressed with what KIA has to offer – especially the warranties – 7 years/100,000 miles in the case of the Venga, Cee’d and Sportage. So I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce you to the models that are the KIA family by inviting you, the next time you are in Bognor Regis, to drop in to our showroom at 65 Aldwick Road and discover for yourself why the KIA brand is going from strength to strength.

Design firm’s big on boosting businesses

Can you imagine a more diverse set of clients – dental practices, loft converters, florists and accountants? But Worthing-based XL Design has revitalised these businesses.
XL Design was founded over 10 years ago and is headed up by Clive Spring, whose design pedigree goes back 28 years and although the company works for clients all over the UK, Clive says, “We’re keen to build up business in the South.”
And they’re so confident they can help any client, XL Design offers a FREE brand and marketing healthcheck.
“So if you’re so involved in running a business you can no longer identify the best direction for branding and marketing, we’ll look at all those issues and work out the profitable opportunities, such as through advertising and cross-selling. This gives clients incredibly robust insights, which can then easily lead to new business.”
Armed with that information, if companies then want XL Design to create a website, leaflets etc… it’s the easiest of steps, but there is no obligation.
“Don’t take our word for it though,” says Clive, “We live by what our customers say and above all we offer London quality of service at local prices.”

The Memorial Stone Centre

Stone- Safe

We would like to inform all our clients that we have been and will continue to fix memorial to the highest standard.

Now safely regulations have been introduced nationally and many cemetery authorities are insisting all memorial masons have to be registered in order to be allowed to work within their burial grounds.

The Memorial Stone Centre takes the safety issues of memorial installation in cemeteries and churchyards very seriously given the number of deaths and injuries from unstable memorials and has developed over the past ten years a unique stability system named Stone- safe.

Having chosen a memorial for your loved one, now it’s time to consider the stability of the fixing, as the owner of the memorial is responsible for the maintenance and stability of the headstone. This can also pose a significant health and safety risk, not to mention further expense at a later date, as with some other memorial fixings.

Stone-safe leads the field for peace of mind in memorial stability and safety, arising from personal experience and extensive research into safety issues.

The traditional lawn memorial, a two- section structure, is often placed on disturbed ground on a shallow concrete base. Even when the memorial and base are permanently fixed with a central ground anchor, this will not ensure stability of the memorial in poor soil conditions- the base will have insufficient resistance to overturning and will be susceptible to toppling over.

Traditional methods of foxing should be regarded as a base from which improvements in memorial safety could develop, and not as a practise to be blindly followed. Traditions die hard, but it is essential that best working practises should develop in the light of modern technology. The best mason is the one with an open mind who embraces changes and uses his skills and experience to constantly seek a higher standard of fixing. Innovation is about implementation of change and creating something new to improve performance.

Stone-safe stability system is not just a conventional concrete slab with ground anchors, but a state- of-the-art system designed and developed to meet all ground and safety requirements, an all in-depth foundation proven to have a significant contribution to the stability of a surface base.

With health and safety in the workplace of paramount importance, it must be stressed the safety is dependent on the quality of the product materials, the workmanship of the mason and the management of the cemetery authority.

Technology properly applied leads to improved performance and higher acceptance standards.

Results: The Stone-safe system has for two consecutive years won the National Phoenix Award for Memorial Safety. The system has been rigorously tested by Professor Moy at the University of Southampton (Department of Civil Engineering) and certified as a capable of withstanding a 250kg- plus force.

    * National Association of Memorial Masons Accredited category A, B and C
    * Arun Business Partnership Award 2005- 2006 New Technology
    * Observer Business Awards Innovation Award 2007
    * Trading Standards Approved Buy With Confidence Scheme 2007
    * 30- year insurance-backed guarantee
    * Microchip identification

Stone-safe have raised their concern as to the safety of the traditional method of fixing a lawn memorial and together with Bramm, the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons, are now working on a review to British standards 8415 in order to raise the standard.

I Fast Ltd.

10 years ‘ON FIRE’!

TO CELEBRATE 10 YEARS TRADING IN 2010 WE WOULD LIKE TO OFFER ALL MEMBERS OF THE ARUN BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP 10% OFF ANY COURSE BOOKED THIS YEAR !

Gary Tompsett – Director of Independent Fire Safety
Training (IFAST) Ltd looks at the
importance of having good fire
safety precautions in place in business.

Our company celebrates 10 years of trading in 2010. A local business now employing 6 people has been providing businesses both locally and nationally with solutions to fire safety issues and related matters since early 2000.

INVESTMENT V COST

Most businesses whether large or small often see fire safety as a cost rather than an investment.

We often hear of staff (particularly management) not able to attend a fire training course
because they are ‘too busy’ !!! We would respectfully point out that if an untrained member of staff, who could and should have attended a course but didn’t does something wrong that contributes towards a serious fire that might destroy the business then ‘who is busy then’ – No one !

Most fires are preventable and more often than not are down to human error.

If you are a local business owner or are responsible for fire safety in your company
then ask yourself the following 3 questions about your staff who walk past fire extinguishers every day of their working life but would they know :-
1) What does the nearest extinguisher contain ?
2) What sort of fire will it deal with?
3) Do they know how to use it correctly to get the most from it?
These are just 3 questions that are covered on both theory and practical fire training courses run by Ifast to endorse the importance of the investment in training staff in fire safety precaution measures to ensure that a good fire safety policy of a written fire risk assessment, regularly maintained fire extinguishers and fire alarm, staff training and regular fire drills ALL help a business to continue successfully trading.

For further information on of the services listed that IFAST provide please contact them on 01243 55 38 68 and they will be happy to advise your organisation in 2010 and beyond………
