Industrial Estate Businesses Going Green
, Monday, 18 February 2008

As an Arun resident, recycling at home is second nature now to me as it is to many. The green bins with the blue tops we all have in the district are great because it’s relatively clear what can and can’t go in.  And we don’t have to separate most of it unlike in other districts. However for various reasons we don’t have the same service for businesses be it commercial or via the public sector.

One of the areas of interest at Business Park meetings therefore has been recycling, particularly of cardboard and plastics. This has come out strongly in at least 3 different business park association meetings, however it is a view shared by many.  As previously mentioned, the provision of a recycling service by waste providers is limited.

It can be expensive and often due to where recycling stations are located, impractical.  That was until one of the business park occupiers found a service from local company Waste Services, who are part of the Verdant Group.

At a Rustington Trading Estate meeting earlier this year, Darren Jacks from Waste Services was invited to come and talk to businesses to illustrate how their “Mixed-Use” scheme could save them money and improve their environmental credentials. At the time, this was the first “Mixed-Use” commercial scheme on the South Coast, and with potential savings of over £500 per annum, the concept was very well received by attendees. So well received in fact that a quarter of businesses on the trading estate are now recycling with Waste Services, and reducing their standard waste collections.

Word is spreading and after another business park meeting on Harwood Road Industrial Estate, Littlehampton, at least a quarter of businesses there are now using the service.  Through Darren’s work and through the Business Parks network, the numbers are beginning to grow significantly.

Waste Services offer a no obligation, free audit of a company’s waste output to analyse the requirements and to highlight cost savings. Government legislation being introduced in October this year means that all businesses will have to “pre-treat” their waste. This basically means that businesses will have to recycle. By taking advantage of Waste Services’ free audit now, your business could benefit from being ahead of the game.

As I’ve already shown from the examples quoted, it can really benefit your business by working together with your neighbours to procure a service for the benefit of all. In this case it is a service which not only improves the bottom line, but will also help the environment.
