Big Sussex Week is coming!

Big Sussex Week is a public relations exercise to raise the profile of Sussex tourism by encouraging local people to enjoy tourism, leisure and hospitality businesses on their doorstep, held between Monday 16 – Sunday 22 June 2008 and Arun businesses are being encouraged to get involved.

What is “Your Big Sussex Week”?

It’s a week long PR campaign to raise the profile of Sussex tourism by encouraging Sussex residents to visit the attractions on their doorstep. A high profile press launch with the Lord Lieutenants of East and West Sussex is taking place on Monday 16 June, which is St Richard’s Day, the Patron Saint of Sussex.

How does it work?

Participating businesses make an attractive ‘added value’ offer. Available only to Sussex Residents for the week 16 – 22 June 2008, the offer is redeemable through a voucher downloaded from the event website www.bigsussexweek.co.uk. Vouchers are available from local Tourist Information Centres for Sussex residents without access to a printer.

What’s in it for you?

  • A targeted promotion to local residents.
  • Additional business at a relatively quiet time of the year.
  • Media interest – press, radio, television – this promotion is aimed at their readers, listeners, viewers.
  • Repeat custom from visiting friends and relatives.
  • A profile boost, particularly for less well known attractions.
  • The opportunity to benefit from a co-ordinated press and PR campaign (the value of press coverage in 2007 was £31,000 and mentions on TV / Radio reached over 1.8 million people).

How is the event being promoted?

  • A programme of PR activity delivered by The Priory Partnership including all newspapers, magazines, radio and TV channels.
  • Sponsored leaflet distribution through Budgens supermarkets
  • A poster campaign at Southern Railways stations across Sussex
  • Leaflet distribution by Take One Media
  • Through local authority websites and residents’ magazines
  • Posters in Tourist Information Centres, Libraries, etc.
  • To employees of the largest Sussex companies including BAA Gatwick Airport.

How to maximise your participation benefits?

  • Make sure people know about it – put information on your website and put up a poster on site.
  • Let us know if you have organized an event that ties in with the week and we will do our best to arrange pre-publicity.
  • Make your offer too good to miss.
  • Work with neighbouring businesses so they know to pass on information about you and vice-versa.

How is it managed?

  • Only people with a Sussex postcode can access the vouchers.
  • We will keep you informed about the number of voucher downloads per attraction (please bear in mind the average take-up figure is generally around 25%).

What to do now?

Download and complete the relevant form for your business:
Return form by April 14th indicating the value added offer you are making for Your Big Sussex Week. Even if your attraction is free entry you can still take part and benefit from the promotional activity. Suggestions for a value added offer are 2-for-1, 3-for-2, a free guidebook; a free offer in the tea-room, free pint at the local pub; free souvenir item – you may think of something else which works for you and would be valued by Sussex Residents in this promotion.

If your offer relates to specific times (e.g. the weekend only, weekdays only) please make sure that is clearly marked. Include a brief 50-word description of your attraction and a good quality jpeg or photo image for the website. If you took part last year and wish to use the same description and image, please mark that on the form.

Sussex Tourism Partnership, promoter of the initiative, looks forward to working with you to grow the benefits of Your Big Sussex Week. Similar schemes are popular in neighbouring counties, and as awareness grows within Sussex so will the participation.
