May Partnership Newsletter
, Wednesday, 30 April 2008
Welcome to the May Arun Business Partnership newsletter. Each time I write a newsletter I seem to get more and more things to tell you about. This one looks to be a bit of a bumper issue – so here we go!

What’s Been Going on?

Our March meeting had to be cancelled due to 20 foot waves at Felpham but was re-arranged for 14th April when around 50 business people turned up on a sunny evening and were treated to the wonderful hospitality of newly refurbished Beachcroft Hotel. Each meeting seems to attract more and more new businesses which is great – we’re always keen to meet those that are just starting out or have been in existence for a while but have only just managed to get along and this meeting was a combination of both.

Our next quarterly meeting is on 16th June at The White Swan on the A27 at Arundel. As usual we start at 5.00 p.m. and will be finished by 7.00 p.m.. If you remember the White Swan then do come along and see the fabulous transformation that has taken place over the last few months. If you don’t remember it just come along and see how wonderful it is and meet lots of other interesting local business people.

As with as all our business networking events – it’s FREE!

An email to let us know you are coming would be very useful – This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Getting To Know You – our 7th year and still going strong!

If you’ve read the last few newsletters you will know that our ever popular Getting To Know You event takes place on 9th July at Fontwell Park Racecourse. It’s your chance to bring along examples of what you do, lots of business cards and meet other local businesses that might just want your product or service. To book your space or if you want to know more This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . It’s always a great event and best of all - it’s FREE!

Well Done To ……

We are hoping that “Well Done To …” might just become a regular newsletter feature and with so many successful companies in Arun why not?

So please put your hands together for …..

The Beachcroft Hotel

Following their recent complete refurbishment The Beachcroft Hotel has been recognised with 3 AA stars. Well done to Robert and his obviously fabulous Team. Read the full story on your Partnership website!

Mrs Frances Farrer Brown

Can now not only boast at being an official Blue Badge Guide but also a Blue Badge Guide for 2012 venues. I had a fascinating discussion with Frances about some of the vantage points for viewing the 2012 construction (we’re not allowed to use the word Olymp…..) and regeneration of the area. If there is enough interest Frances is happy to be a guide on a visit to the area. The “Important Stuff to Help You” Section

This month we’ve been made aware of lots of opportunities for training which if you pay attention should help you run your business better. Read on …..

Arun Gets More Skilled Business Leaders

Since January 2008 Littlehampton based training company, Whole Being have been running a new NLP Business Practitioner course that is specifically designed for busy business owners and managers who want to learn how to become more skilled in selling, communication and business networking. They are the only training organisation on the whole south coast to offer this course – and they are based in Littlehampton! All the courses are held at Dove Lodge in Beach Road Littlehampton.

Find more information on the next course, which starts in June, by clicking on this link.

And the good news is that you may be eligible for train to gain funding under the Business Leaders programme. So call Whole Being on 01903 730254 and they will put you in contact with your local skills broker – go on pick up that phone!

Mental Health Awareness

If you or your staff deal with customers who may have mental health problems you could find yourselves in all sorts of difficult situations. I’m sure you all handle these competently but if you think you or any of your Team could do with some extra training, Worthing and Littlehampton MIND has been awarded training to do just this. For further details, read the full story!

Chris’s Corner

Many of you will know Chris Shephard, whose job it is to make the life of those companies on our Business Parks just that little bit better. From what we hear he’s been doing a pretty good job! Part of this work is producing a fortnightly newsletter. We thought that even if you’re not located on a Business park you might still like to know what’s going on and maybe even sneak in the back door and take advantage of some of the offers and opportunities. Click here to take a sneaky peek!

Where’s Miriam?

You’ll be pleased to know that Miriam has been out and about quite a bit this month! She’s been to Chequer Frames in Bognor Regis and Envirowaste in Yapton (who can help you out with all of your recycling needs). Read all about her visits and what she got up to!

The last few bits – but no less interesting than the rest!

Have Your Say.

We hope that our local businesses are interested in their local communities and would welcome the chance to have their say about what is going on around them. Arun District Council is certainly interested in hearing what businesses have to say.

Here’s your invite ….. Your Kind of Place"? Consultation Events

Arun Local Strategic Partnership wants your input to help us review “Our Kind of Place” which is the Community Strategy for Arun. The aim of the “Our Kind of Place” is to set out a shared vision of how we would like Arun to be 20+ years into the future. It also details the plans needed to deliver the vision.

It is important that as many people as possible attend the three events to guide Arun’s development for the next two decades. Either read the full story on your website or contact Caroline Gosford – 01903 713457 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . You will need to register your intention to attend because food is being provided for you!

Littlehampton’s Blooming Great

Do you want to get your name right across Littlehampton in one of the most prestigious national competitions going? Find out more about all of the opportunities on offer (and there are a lot!) by reading the full story.

Avisford Ball

Winston’s Wish (http://www.winstonswish.org.uk/) is a national charity that helps bereaved children and young people rebuild their lives after a family death. Every year we help over 13,000 children, young people and their families through practical support and guidance to families, professionals and anyone concerned about a grieving child.

Hilton Hotels is hosting a spectacular ball in 2008 in support of local children’s charity, Winston’s Wish. To be held in the glamorous surroundings of the newly refurbished ballroom at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel, this evening promises to be sheer entertainment with a touch of luxury.

And Finally: Imitation Being the Sincerest Form of Flattery …….

We are pleased that more networks and networking events are being set up in and around our area. This can only help with the Business Partnership aims of promoting local businesses and encouraging businesses to trade and work with each other.

We are equally pleased and flattered that some are duplicating the format that we have run successfully for some 10 years now for our regular meetings, the Getting To Know You Event and a local organisation even used our words for their Business Awards categories – indeed we are flattered!

What doesn’t please us is the prospect of local companies parting with large amounts of cash to be involved in these alternative events. So ….. by way of explanation here is how your Business Partnership is and has been run for the past 10 years or so and how we are able to offer you what we do FREE OF CHARGE.

Arun District Council fully supports the Partnership, gives us a small budget and we make the best use of this that we can. We are able to make this stretch a long way because local companies work with us to provide venues free of charge for our regular meetings and at a greatly reduced rate for events such as the Business Awards and Getting to Know You - because they too see the value of what we do.

The Annual Business Awards event is sponsored by local companies so that no-one has to pay to attend. Arun District Council also pays for Miriam’s time to look after the day to day running of the partnership.

The Arun Business Partnership web site has 2 levels. If you wish you can create a free entry or you can have an enhanced entry for £100. The income from this after a small amount of expense to run the site goes back in to your Business Partnership.

Our newsletter goes out to all those businesses in Arun that we have contact details for. This now runs into the thousands as we have been able to use various databases to help us build our communications for the benefit of local companies.

The Partnership is overseen by about 8 of your local business colleagues who give their time freely to ensure that we are doing what you would want and not what we want to do! We are always looking to expand this Steering Group and if you are interested in being a part of that Miriam would love to hear from you.
