Blackwell backs Organ Donor campaign
, Monday, 12 May 2008
Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell is encouraging fans to give the gift of life by signing up to the NHS Organ Donor Register. He is backing a campaign to get more people signed up to the Register in the build up to the 31st British Transplant Games which are hosted in Sheffield this August.
Kevin said: “This is a fantastic campaign, which I am very happy to support.
“The Games are a great way to raise awareness of organ donation and I would encourage everyone to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register and be a hero by giving the gift of life.
“What a great achievement it is for people to show just how much they care by signing up to the Register.”
The Games are one of the biggest annual multi-sports events in the UK and will take place at venues across Sheffield from 7th until 11th August, this year.
The aim of the event is to encourage transplant patients to regain fitness, to demonstrate the benefits of organ transplantation and to promote awareness of the need for more people to sign on to the NHS Organ Donor Register.
Currently in the UK, there are more than 8,000 people waiting for a transplant, but there are less than 3,000 transplants each year due to a shortage of donors.
To register on the NHS Organ Donor Register please telephone 0845 60 60 400 or go to www.uktransplant.org.uk to register online. Most importantly, please discuss your wishes with your family and friends – thank you
