Sally’s Challenge - Get Hiking For Hospices
, Wednesday, 28 May 2008
Sally Gunnell OBE, Olympic gold medal winning athlete, challenged everyone to “get hiking” as the 2008 Hike 4 Hospices campaign was launched at Hove County Cricket Ground recently.

The Hike 4 Hospices will take place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August 2008 and include a number of routes across the South Downs, ranging from 5 to 14 miles. The weekend hike will cover 42 miles. Special medals will be awarded to all participants and there will be individual and team prizes for those who raise the most sponsorship

“Anyone can enter and enjoy a weekend of healthy exercise in the beautiful Sussex countryside while helping four very worthy local causes. I hope as many people as possible will take part and this year I will do a section of the walk with my two children”, said Sally.

St Barnabas House in Worthing, St Wilfrid’s in Chichester, St Peter and St James in North Chailey and The Martlets in Hove will benefit from the funds raised. They do a wonderful job caring for local people with advanced progressive life-limiting illnesses but only receive a small amount of government funding. Each hospice costs around £4million per year to run and the majority of these costs have to be met by donations and fundraising activities like the Hike 4 Hospices event.

Last year, ten Sussex Rotary clubs decided to do something to help and created this new fundraising event to benefit all four charities resulting in the 227 hikers raising a massive £40,000 between them in sponsorship. Jim Oliver, the CEO of Hike 4 Hospices quoted, “Last year’s event was a fantastic success and this year we are aiming to double the number of walkers and raise twice the amount of money for the hospices. With Sally’s help, we hope to attract more walkers.”

This year, the Rotarians are hoping for 500 walkers and their target is to raise £75,000 for the hospices. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, then sign up today – visit www.hike4hospices.com or call Ian Clarke on 01903 742106.
