Littlehampton gets the Blue Flag Award

Littlehampton has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for 2008, after missing out on the award last year.

The stretch of beach from the River Arun to East Beach Cafe has been awarded the flag by Encams, the charity behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.  The award recognises clean and safe stretches of coastline that promote environmental education and offer excellent visitor facilities.

The criteria to qualify for a Blue Flag includes the provision of first aid facilities, clean toilets, recycling facilities and access for disabled visitors.  The water is continuously tested during the summer season to check that it meets the strict bathing water quality standards and winners must also show commitment to environmental management and education.

Cllr Norman Dingemans, Cabinet Member for Tourism at Arun District Council said: “That we have regained the Blue Flag for Littlehampton is a testament to the hard work that has gone into achieving and maintaining such high standards on our beach.

“The Blue Flag is a badge of honour for beaches not just in this country but across the whole of Europe.  It offers visitors to Littlehampton a guarantee that they have access to a clean, safe beach with excellent facilities, and Arun residents can be proud of what they have on their doorstep.

“We must now make sure we keep up the good work and continue to raise standards so that we keep hold of the award next year”.

In addition, both Littlehampton and Bognor Regis have received a Quality Coast Award, also handed out by Encams.

The awards recognise beaches that are well managed to suit the needs of different visitors, reflecting the diverse nature of the coastline.  Littlehampton received the award for the same stretch of beach that received the Blue Flag, and Bognor received the award for the beach between the pier and Gloucester Road.

The awards are decided by an independent panel of judges and last three years, during which time the beaches are visited by trained surveyors to make sure the high standards are maintained.  All winners are listed on the awards website www.qualitycoast.org, which allows visitors to search for a beach that suits their needs by answering a few simple questions such as whether they intend to swim, or require disabled facilities.

Arun District Council Chairman Councillor Ashvin Patel said: “It is wonderful that both Bognor and Littlehampton have received a Quality Coast Award, as they each have lovely beaches that are popular with residents and visitors to the District.

“This is an achievement we can all be proud of, and it recognises the effort we have put into making sure Sussex by the Sea has excellent facilities that everyone can enjoy.  Combined with Littlehampton receiving the Blue Flag, it can only serve to make our District even more popular with visitors”.
