Arun Peace Week - celebrating Arun's diversity
, Friday, 04 July 2008
Arun residents and organisations are being encouraged to celebrate the diversity of the District in the first-ever Arun Peace Week festival later this year.
Taking place between 15-23 November, the inaugural festival will take place across the whole District and local communities are urged to come forward now with their ideas.
Local cross-community group Peaceworks, with support from Arun District Council and the Arun Community Cohesion Group, is organising Peace Week and hopes to use different events including sports, music and dance to bring communities closer.
Councillor Paul Dendle, Cabinet Member for Central Services and Finance, is a member of the Arun Community Cohesion Group. “We in Arun are certainly blessed with a beautifully diverse geographical location with our coast, our towns and the South Downs. But increasingly over recent years we can recognise that the human environment is just as diverse,” he said.
“More and more people come from different backgrounds, have different preferences and enjoy different lifestyles. Difference can make for a richer and more diverse life and it is exactly these kinds of differences that are worth celebrating.”
Chris Seaton, Arun Peace Week Chairman said: “Arun would not be the place it is without all its creative expressions of life and Arun Peace Week is the community festival of the year to celebrate together what we love about our area.
“From 15-23 November events celebrating diversity, peace-making and a future with hope will be taking place all across Arun. In order for Arun Peace Week to be a celebration of the people for the people, we are hoping that as many residents as possible get involved.
“Can your group, organisation or street run a simple event to celebrate peace and diversity in Arun? Your participation could take one of many forms, from exhibiting art work to preparing food, from friendship football-matches to diversity expressed through music. We are urging anyone who is eager to help or has some interesting ideas to contact us and join in with Peace Week.”
