Council nomination leads to prestigious award for local building company

A local building company has won a prestigious regional award for innovative construction after being nominated by the Council.

Tunmore Design and Build, based in Littlehampton, won the best small house builder (under 10 units) prize at the LABC Sussex Built In Quality Awards ceremony last Friday (6 June).

The award scheme, which was open to architects, designers, builders and construction professionals, was supported by Arun and other local authority building control services throughout Sussex and the prestigious event was attended by more than 160 professionals from across the construction industry.

As one of only nine category winners from across the region, Tunmore Design and Build will now automatically go through to the national finals later this year where they could scoop an even bigger prize.

Tunmore, founded more than 50 years ago by Bill Tunmore and now run by his son, Terry, were nominated for the awards by Arun’s Building Control department for their outstanding project Three Oaks, a development of two detached homes upon a brown field site in Arundel.

The new highly-desirable homes were recognised for their attention to detail and ‘green’ credentials, which include providing 75% of hot water through solar panels, the restricted use of non-recyclable materials such as upvc and the use of locally sourced materials wherever possible.

Terry Tunmore was accompanied at the awards ceremony by Council Leader Mrs Gillian Brown and Cabinet Member for Planning, Cllr Ricky Bower, as well as Senior Building Control surveyor Jonathan Strange who worked closely with Terry, offering advice throughout the project.

Mrs Brown said: “We are all absolutely delighted that Terry and his team have won this award for such a high-quality project and feel confident that they can repeat their success in the national final later this year.

“The Council’s Building Control team has built up a strong working relationship with Tunmore which was praised by the LABC, and it is great to see such pro-active partnership work being recognised at such a high level. Well done to everyone involved.”

Terry Tunmore commented after winning the award: “We have constructed new homes since 1987 and are proud and absolutely delighted to win the LABC Best Small Housebuilder award.

“We are always striving for integrity and quality in our construction and service, and this is a wonderful recognition of the hard work, loyalty and consistent approach of our whole team.

“Throughout these 20 years we have never ceased to enjoy an excellent relationship with Arun District Council and Building Control, who are always prepared to ‘work through’ problems and assist in compliance with ever-changing legislation. This award stands as a testament to the same consistent approach and teamwork.”

The Built in Quality Awards scheme highlights the importance of Building Control in achieving high standards. They acknowledge the role that building regulations play in the creation of high performance buildings and give well-deserved recognition to companies and individuals within the construction industry who are committed to producing high quality buildings throughout Sussex.

Glass trophies were presented to the winners of each of the nine categories rewarding a wide variety of work, from domestic extensions to multi-million pound projects.

Tunmore was one of two local companies nominated for an award by Arun District Council, which is one of the founder members of the Sussex LABC Awards.

Tunmore’s Three Oaks project was also put forward for the Best Sustainability Innovation Award, and Hampshire-based company Crayfern Homes Ltd were also nominated for their development in Limmer Lane, Felpham in the Best Flats/Apartments (and other residential new build) Award.
