A review by Jerry and Lindsay Saddington.

From the moment we arrived it was clear we were at a popular and well liked public house.  Having parked a little down the road (the car park was full by 7 O’ Clock) we were met with a warm atmosphere and, although the bar was busy, it was also well staffed.  We were welcomed with a ready smile as we were served.

The clientele was mixed, with both the older generation and families relaxing and dining throughout the pub, adding to the comfortable feel.  There was also welcome absence of bleeping games machines and jukebox music, the steady flow of conversation providing all the background noise needed to set the tone for the evening.  The public areas are wonderfully panelled and the walls decorated with pictures of local memorabilia for an absorbing distraction during the quieter moments of the evening.

The choice of wines is good, with a selection of quality reds and whites, and the ales will keep the beer enthusiasts just as content with a variety of guest ales.  The menu selection is also varied and caters for most pallets, so whether you’re looking for traditional pub grub or something a little more sophisticated, you won’t be disappointed.  The Chef has a flair for seafood and the specials menu clearly reflected his talent for these dishes, irresistible for those of us who enjoy the fruits of the sea.

We ordered dishes from both specials and bar menus.  For the starters, the Scallops melted in the mouth, helped along by a delicate garlic butter sauce.  The Mushrooms were succulent and tasty.  The side salad was crisp and fresh and the portions were generous.  The main courses were equally satisfying.  The Steak and Kidney Pie was a substantial helping of tender filling surrounded with a layer of perfectly cooked pastry, topped with a rich, smooth gravy.  The steak was lean and cooked perfectly to order.  Again, the vegetables and side dishes were crisp and fresh, and cooked with taste and texture in mind.  We were clearly in the hands of a chef who combined pride with skill.

Despite the fact that the generous portions of the meals had left us content and replete, the desserts warranted a little more of our attention, and ignoring declarations of not being able to eat another mouthful, we indulged ourselves one last time and were glad we did.  The desserts were as good as the rest of meal.

As we sat sipping our coffee in the well tended garden, we reflected on our visit; the warmth of the atmosphere, the attention and friendliness of the staff, the fine food, and decided – we will definitely be back for more.
